Also known as infantile paralysis, it swept through vast areas of North America in the firstĀ half of the 20th century.
The horrifying thing was, nobody was sure how it was transmitted. Public places like swimming pools and movie theaters were closed, but nothing seemed to be effective in
stopping the spread of the disease. There was no certain cure, and no vaccination.
Most of the victims were children, of all socio-economic classes.
This is the story of one family’s struggle when their young daughter is stricken.
